Unlike digital formats, a vinyl record is a physical medium bound by spatial mechanics. The cutting stylus physically carves grooves into a lacquer disc. Low frequencies and high amplitudes require wider, deeper grooves, which consume more physical real estate on the disc.

If a master is too loud (heavily compressed to -8 LUFS, for example) or too long, the cutting engineer is forced to lower the overall cutting volume. This decreases the signal-to-noise ratio, making the inherent surface noise of the vinyl much more prominent.

Furthermore, out-of-phase stereo bass information causes the cutting stylus to move vertically. Excessive vertical excursion will literally cause the needle to jump out of the groove during playback.
