Under The Hood: Peer-to-Peer Streaming
Traditional studio streaming solutions require expensive subscriptions, proprietary plugin installations, and complex port-forwarding configurations. This creates friction when dealing with A&R representatives or remote clients who just want to click a link and listen.
This tool utilizes WebRTC (Web Real-Time Communication) to establish a direct, encrypted peer-to-peer connection between your machine and the listener. By utilizing the navigator.mediaDevices API, the browser intercepts your system's audio output-bypassing the need for DAW plugins.
Because the connection is peer-to-peer, your uncompressed master audio is never routed through a centralized server, ensuring zero signal degradation and maximum security for unreleased material.
Why use a studio stream?
If you are trying to produce a song with a collaborator over Zoom or Skype, you know how terrible the audio sounds. Video conferencing apps aggressively compress your audio and try to cancel out background noise, which completely destroys the quality of the music you are trying to share.
This tool uses WebRTC technology to bypass all that compression, giving you a direct, lossless audio link from your studio software to your collaborator's headphones.
How to set up the stream
First, you need to use a virtual audio cable (like BlackHole on Mac or Voicemeeter on Windows) to route the master output of your Digital Audio Workstation into your web browser. Select that virtual cable as your input source on this page.
The tool will generate a private link. Send that link to your co-producer or client. As soon as they open the link, they will hear a high-quality, stereo stream of your mix with virtually zero delay.
Frequently Asked Questions
Do I need special hardware to use this?
No. As long as you have a computer with a built-in microphone and speakers, you can join a session. For the host, you might need a virtual audio cable plugin to route your DAW into the browser.
How is this different from Zoom or Skype?
Zoom uses aggressive noise-cancellation and compression algorithms optimized for talking. This completely destroys music. Our WebRTC stream uses high-bitrate, uncompressed audio perfect for critical listening.
Is the audio perfectly in sync for live jamming?
Unfortunately, no. The physics of the internet means there is always a slight delay (latency) of at least 20 to 100 milliseconds. It is impossible to play live instruments together over the internet in perfect sync.
