Why is the bass in my room so muddy?
When you play a bass note out of your studio monitors, the sound wave travels through the air and bounces off your walls. Because low frequencies have physical wavelengths that are as long as the room itself, they fold back on top of themselves.
These folded waves are called standing waves or axial room modes. Depending on where you sit in the room, these waves either add together (making the bass incredibly loud and muddy) or cancel each other out (creating a "null" where you can't hear the bass at all).
How to use this tool to mix better:
- Input your room dimensions. The calculator will output the exact frequencies and musical notes that are physically trapped in your room.
- If you see that your Length has a mode at 60Hz (Note B1), you know that whenever your sub-bass plays a B, it will sound artificially loud or completely disappear depending on how far you sit from the front wall.
- Use this knowledge to stop second-guessing yourself! If B1 sounds crazy loud in your room, check it on headphones. Do not aggressively EQ your mix just because your room is lying to you.
- To fix these modes, you need thick bass traps (porous absorption at least 4-6 inches thick) placed in the corners of your room.
