What is a room mode?
Every room has a natural resonant frequency depending on its physical size. If you produce a song in a small bedroom, the sound waves bounce off the walls and crash into each other. These are called room modes or standing waves.
They cause massive problems when mixing music because they artificially boost certain bass frequencies while completely canceling out others. You might think your song lacks bass and turn it up, only to find out it sounds muddy and terrible in your car.

Acousticians generally agree that a perfectly square room is the absolute worst for mixing. A rectangular room where the dimensions are not multiples of each other (like 10x14x8) is vastly superior.
Do I need bass traps in every corner?
If your calculator shows massive low-end room modes, putting thick bass traps in all four corners of your room is the most effective way to flatten the frequency response.
