The Physics of Vinyl Mastering

Unlike digital formats, a vinyl record is a physical medium bound by spatial mechanics. The cutting stylus physically carves grooves into a lacquer disc. Low frequencies and high amplitudes require wider, deeper grooves, which consume more physical real estate on the disc.

If a master is too loud (heavily compressed to -8 LUFS, for example) or too long, the cutting engineer is forced to lower the overall cutting volume. This decreases the signal-to-noise ratio, making the inherent surface noise of the vinyl much more prominent.

Furthermore, out-of-phase stereo bass information causes the cutting stylus to move vertically. Excessive vertical excursion will literally cause the needle to jump out of the groove during playback. This calculator cross-references your runtime and loudness targets against standard lacquer constraints to prevent compromised cuts.

Why calculate vinyl mastering time?

Pressing a record is very different from uploading a song to Spotify. A physical vinyl record only has a limited amount of physical space for grooves. The louder your music is, and the more heavy bass it has, the wider those grooves need to be.

If you try to fit too much music on one side of a record, the mastering engineer has to lower the volume significantly to make it fit, which ruins the sound quality. This calculator tells you exactly how much music you can safely fit on a record.

How to use the calculator

Select the size of the record you are pressing, usually a 12-inch or a 7-inch. Next, select the playback speed, either 33 RPM or 45 RPM. Then, enter the total running time of all the songs you want to put on Side A.

The calculator will instantly tell you if the music will fit comfortably, if the engineer will have to lower the volume, or if you need to cut a song entirely to save the audio quality.

Why is there a time limit for vinyl?

A vinyl record is a physical groove carved into wax. The longer the song, the closer the grooves have to be squeezed together. If you pack too much time onto a record, the grooves get so shallow that the audio becomes very quiet and distorted.

What happens if a song has too much bass?

Heavy sub-bass forces the cutting needle to physically swing very wide. If it swings too wide, the needle on the record player will literally jump out of the groove and skip.

Do I need a separate master for vinyl?

Yes. Your super-loud, heavily limited digital master for Spotify will sound terrible on vinyl. You need a highly dynamic, quieter master specifically cut for the physical limitations of a record.
