Why convert drums to MIDI?
If you record a live drummer and the performance is a bit sloppy, or if you simply do not like the sound of their snare drum, you are usually stuck with it. Audio is hard to fix. But if you convert that live drum recording into MIDI, you can completely replace their kit with massive studio drum samples.
This technique, known as drum replacement, is a standard trick used by professional mixing engineers to get huge, radio-ready drum sounds.
How to extract the drum groove
Upload your drum loop or live drum recording. Our transient detection engine scans the audio and separates the kick drum, snare drum, and hi-hats based on their frequencies. It drops a MIDI note exactly where each hit occurs.
Download the resulting MIDI file, drag it into your DAW, and route it to your favorite drum plugin. You now have the exact groove and swing of the original drummer, but with perfectly clean, hard-hitting samples.
Frequently Asked Questions
Does it capture the volume of the hits?
Yes. The engine analyzes the peak volume of every drum hit and translates that into MIDI velocity, so the groove retains its natural, human dynamics.
Can it separate the kick and the snare?
Our engine is specifically tuned to recognize the low-frequency thud of a kick drum versus the high-frequency snap of a snare, allowing it to place them on separate MIDI notes.
Will this work on a full song?
No. The algorithm gets incredibly confused by vocals and basslines. It is designed exclusively for isolated drum loops or raw drum kit recordings.
